Seattle In recognition of his trailblazing efforts to provide conscientious cooks with healthy, humane alternatives to cholesterol- and saturated-fat-laden dairy frozen desserts, Seattle resident Jeff Rogers, author of the Vice Cream cookbook, has won People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' (PETA) Proggy Award for Best New Dessert Cookbook. Proggys (short for "progress") are presented to animal-friendly people, companies, and organizations. Rogers will receive a commemorative plaque and will be featured on PETA's Web site PETA.org, which is visited by thousands of people every day.
In 1997, Rogers ate his last bite of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Two years later, the Vermont native began experimenting with a pantry of non-animal ingredientson a mission to create the richest, creamiest vegan ice creams in the world. "The Naughty Vegan" was born and Rogers began putting together a collection of recipes designed to dazzle the taste buds of vegan and nonvegan ice cream aficionados alike. Rogers has created tantalizing recipes for basics like vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, as well as more exotic flavors such as espresso, pecan pie, "vegg nog," black forest, and strawberry colada.
PETA's annual Proggy Awards were created to recognize animal-friendly achievement in 21st century culture and commerce. This year, there were 48 winners, ranging from producers and marketers of vegan foods and cruelty-free personal-care and household products to companies and individuals helping to promote respect and empathy for animals in books, music, and film.
"Jeff Rogers' phenomenal new cookbook is bound to encourage many diehard ice cream fans to adopt a healthier and more humane alternative to their favorite dessert," says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. "Vegetarianism has gone mainstream, and this is our way of thanking one of the pioneers who helped make it happen."
